The Master Ensuite played a pivotal role in a significant renovation project for which we were contracted with overseeing all aspects of interior design, from spatial planning to material selections and cabinetry design. This private sanctuary was created exclusively for the homeowners, who envisioned a spacious retreat adorned with top-quality fixtures and a colour scheme that seamlessly complemented the overarching interior decor. Our design directive also emphasized the infusion of ample natural light and a sense of spaciousness, featuring a dual shower and vanity unit with sufficient bench space and internal storage, including mirrored storage. The clients desired a dark and moody ambiance to create a private, relaxing retreat.

Our initial design phase revolved around meticulous spatial planning to ensure perfect proportions in alignment with the master bedroom and adjacent walk-through dressing room. It was important that the overall size comfortably accommodated all of the required elements, with the dual shower ultimately dictating the room’s final depth.

Access to the ensuite is through the spacious dressing room. As you enter, your gaze is immediately drawn to the vanity and wall unit directly in front with the dark dual shower to your right.

This layout leaves a clean wall, the exterior wall, to the left which which features a small opening window for ventilation above the in-wall cistern toilet and houses the two vertical pole towel warmers—a feature in this Beach house renovation.

Key Features

  • Mirrored wall storage units above the vanity not only add depth and dimension to the room but also practicality, with all doors equipped with demisters.
  • The vanity is well balanced on the back wall and set in from the tiled wall and glass shower panel to give a centred and proportioned effect. It is also floating off the floor so you can really see the beautiful marble tiles selected.
  • With only one small exterior window we felt the space needed more natural light as per the clients brief so we added a narrow-fixed skylight one third back from vanity wall.
  • We were able to reduce the width of the dual shower due to its large depth which created a intimate space sealed off with full height glass panels with black powder coated trims and central opening door.
  • The materials used echo the theme through this beach house renovation. The vanity fronts and wall unit frame is constructed out of American oak finished with bandsaw effect and dark stain. The internal cabinetry is dark grey to compliment the oak fronts. We chose Corian for the benchtop to tie into the marble wall tile colour and also so we could mould a sink for full colour consistency and seamlessness.
  • The marble wall behind the vanity extends into the corner of the dual shower, where black mosaic tiles start. We did this to create the feeling of a width and balance to back wall. The black mosaic tiles are on 2 of the dual shower walls and go full height with a recessed shelf full width.
  • Lighting throughout the ensuite plays a crucial role in setting the mood, offering several settings that cater to the owners’ preferences. From full illumination, including the striking feature wall lights, to a minimalist ambiance with shower recess lighting only.
  • Our selection of gunmetal Buddy X tapware and showers perfectly sets off the overall look and compliment the colour palette and match the vertical towel rails.
  • For added privacy, a solid American oak full-height cavity slider door, finished in a dark stain, stands ready to enclose the space when needed without affecting the adjacent dressing room.
