Ferns in My Bar

My clients, a professional couple with three young adult children, often host gatherings and desired a dedicated space for beverages, distinct from their kitchen. Their vision included accommodating a bar fridge, glassware, and formal dinnerware. To seamlessly integrate this drinks unit into their living space, I ingeniously repurposed the lounge’s original entryway, creating an intimate nook for the unit.
In accordance with the client’s wishes, the unit was designed with a sense of proportion, ensuring it did not overpower the room. However, the central focal point remained the lush garden visible through a vast glass wall on the opposite side. My objective was to harmoniously blend the indoor and outdoor spaces, mirroring the beauty of the client’s beautiful garden.
To accomplish this, I included bronze mirrors as both a splashback and backing for the overhead glass units. The bronze mirrors enrich the reflection’s vividness, enabling anyone in the lounge to feel fully immersed in the thriving garden, regardless of their vantage point or seating arrangement. The unit’s design maintains a sleek and uncluttered appearance, free from any distracting handles. The velvet-like front panels complement two towering glass-fronted display units. These display units not only echo the exterior materials but also showcase the natural timber flooring.
A challenge presented itself with the exposed supporting beams in the room, which required a clever solution. I addressed this by concealing the last beam closest to the wall with gib, creating a bulkhead for the unit to fit against. Additionally, a bay window limited the unit’s available depth, particularly for the wine fridge. To accommodate this, I skillfully designed the benchtop with varying depths, stepping it out to create ample space for the wine fridge while maintaining a cohesive and visually appealing design.
