Sleek Sophistication

The client’s brief was to maintain a sleek and minimalistic design to compliment the sophisticated architecturally designed home. Brushed brass was a key feature throughout the house and the client wanted this incorporated into the design. The design needed to be stylishly sophisticated, functional for the family and ideal for entertaining.

The main challenge was to balance the already selected materials contributing to the overall aesthetic of the home. This was achieved by incorporating the brushed brass into recessed detailing of the overhead cabinetry and to the negative finger pull of the base cabinets.

Tiles from the entrance of the home are repeated into the splash back providing continuity throughout the scheme.

The beautiful cedar ceiling draws the eye into the stepped down kitchen space. We wanted to ensure there was harmony between the cedar and the kitchen, so the warmth of the ceiling was celebrated with the introduction of the bold black cabinetry and materials to the back wall.

The client wanted to create a statement with a contrast of differing coloured bench tops and materials for the back bench and island. The plain black back bench top is offset with the lighter bench top to the island featuring the striking gold veins that mimic the brass accents.

The American oak veneer to the island links back to the cedar ceiling and introduces warmth back into the design. It also creates a softness against the buffed industrial concrete floor.

Another challenge was to maintain the clean lines. We positioned the fridge into the pantry so the sleek horizontal lines could remain throughout the design. The appliances in the kitchen are seamless and hidden through integration. Black appliances were selected to be functional but blend into the palette.
Positioning the sink on the back wall allows for a large island free of services. This creates a social area for entertaining and is welcoming with the solid timber bar leaner.

Decorative lighting was added to the underside of the bar leaner emphasising the grain of the veneer. Task lighting was added to the working back wall and highlights the subtle veining seen on the tiles. Pendant lights with brushed brass fittings completed the warm feel to the modern kitchen and will be timeless for years to come.
